bobbin thread not picking up.

When I reach the end of a pattern and after the tie off, the machine sometimes does not pick up the bobbin thread correctly and the machine jams. I have to take the bobbin case out, move the wheel at the back to get the thread out of the bobbin area. Also when I start a pattern from the pro-stitcher it starts out with a very long stitch instead of the stitch length I have it set for. Is my machine timing off? Do you have any suggestions?
