Help--I am just practicing to try to learn how to work my own machine on the HandiQuilter frame. I had my machine (Simplicity) serviced and it was working perfectly--bottom and top thread tensions, etc--but when I try to use it on the HQ frame, the bottom tension is very poor (top still looks good). What am I doing wrong??
I am in a time crunch here and need to know something as soon as possible. Thanks in advance for any help I can get.
Cindy,

Are you drawing you bottom thread up and locking the 1st stitch before you begin quilting?

Cathie
Yes, I am, just as she shows on the video that came with it!
I am having trouble with the bottom tension. The top looks great but the bottom looks like a tight straight line--you can't see each individual stitch like to the top looks. I think you could pull out the thread real easy.

Does this mean I need to tighten the top tension or loosen it. I am real confused and have a whole quilt done this way. Trying to decide if I should start tearing apart or just leave it and use the quilt as a give away or throw away.

I am using a perma core tex 40 thread.

A couple of days ago I did a flannel quilt and it seemed the tension was pretty good. I am still trying to get a feel for my machine by doing stippling. Hopefully someday I will get to feathers, etc.

I do appreciate any advice and help.

If the bottom is baggy, then the top is not tight enough, if the top is baggy then the bottom is not tight enough. It is worth a trip over to Superior Threads site to read all of the tension information. It is a great resource. Also this forum (I think it is either under thread problems or maybe the general discussion about eyelashes, is good info.
Hope these will help you, I know how frustrating thread problems can be.
Hi everyone,

I just joined and am thrilled to see this conversation -- I also am having trouble with my bobbin thread...there are little legs on the bottom where the top thread is not being picked up enough.

Ideas?

AND THANKS...I'm new at online forums as well as quilting -- and btw, I'm quilting on HQ16. What fun!
LTeri I posted a reply under you posting. Hope it helps.
Tension is always the question everytime I put on a new quilt. I agree with ChaZ about superior threads website. They have good advice about tension. I have also found different fabrics (flannel, cotton, etc) will make a difference in the tension as well as the different threads. I have been using HQ16 since last October and am just now feeling like I know my machine. I am thinking to make a chart for my machine on tension, thread, and fabric so I know where to start. A mark on the tension dial to give a reference point has worked for me.
