I remember reading how someone cleaned their upper thread tension guides with unwaxed ribbon type dental floss. Does this also work to get that tiny speck of lint out of the bobbin thread guide? Or does anyone have a favorite way to get that little speck of problem causing lint out of there?

I don't have an answer for your question but I need HELP right now before I go insane with this machine. I thought I had the tension adjusted just right - finally. The stitches look great. However, the top thread keeps fraying and breaking. I am using the same thread top and bottom. So - before I go into tension never, never land I will describe some things the machine is doing and hopefully someone can give me advise.

Everything looks good except i keep getting long stitches thrown in. I am trying to keep my speed consistent and the long stitches are not just happening on curves. I know when it's going to throw in a long stitch because I can see the thread loop out of the guide just before it happens. In addition to the long stitches, the top thread breaks and frays every two minutes. When I pull the machine to the side to cut the thread the top thread "snaps" when i cut it, leading me to believe the tension is too tight. the bobbin thread just falls when i cut it. If i loosen the top thread tension too much, I get more long stitches and loose stitches on the back.

So - is my top tension too tight?? Do I need to adjust my bobbin tension every time I adjust the top tension? Do you think I am moving too slowly with my speed set too high?
HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
On the first post, I have used the dental tape to remove lint from that area. I've also been able to blow it out with a shop vac, or using a toothbrush has gotten that out also.

Regarding the second post, it does sound as if your top tension might be a bit tight. When I snip my top thread it does not SNAP. Hopefully you have done the usual as in, changing needle, rethreading, and the like. You are not mentioning what type of thread or the weight of thread you are using, but you might trying turning the needle just a HAIR to your right. Loosen the needle and turn it JUST A HAIR to your right. If I am using a thread that breaks easily this is what I do and usually it will work.

thanks - I was hoping someone was online and would get back to me quickly. I am using a brand I bought from Connecting Threads, I don't remember the name. It was happening with Star 40 wt cotton also. I did change the needle, oil and clean just before I stated this quilt.
I will give this a try and see what happens. I have several quilts waiting to get done and I hate to waste time messing with this machine. I recently opened a quilt shop and am trying to get samples done to hang.
I will let you know.
lindab,

How did you make out with your tension and thread breaking and fraying problem? I had a similar problem, and I was also using Star thread. I also have a "stash" of threads from Connecting Threads. I got through my last quilt without the thread breaking/fraying as frequently as it was in the beginning, but it happen another time or two while I was quilting.
