I just bought an Avante in April. I loaded a sandwiched muslin to practice on. I noticed as I am quilting that I have some "dead spots". What I mean by this is I can be quilting along and when I go to do a swirl, instead of the machine swirling with me, it goes in a straight line and then swirls. What could be the cause of this? I have cleaned the wheels and I wiped down the tracks with a piece of batting, I checked to make sure that there aren't any pieces of thread on the track or in the wheels. I think I have done everything that I know of and still get these dead spots. Also, I have noticed that the machine doesn't move as easily in some spots compared to others. The plug is not getting hooked on anything, I know this because of the way I have it set up.

Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated as this is frustrating when you are quilting along and all of a sudden there is a straight line instead of a curved one.

Make sure the cable that plugs into your encoder wheel is in all the way. Watch the black wheel and make sure that it is turning in your "dead spot." If it is not moving please call into our Customer Service department at 877-897-8458, M-F 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM MDT. They should be able to walk you through any necessary adjustments. Thank you.

Have fun quilting,

Hi,
I am a new Avante owner also and have experienced these dead spots as I have been practicing. I have noted that they occur when I am going relatively slowly and also occur at about where my table joins to the next sections. It almost seems as if there is a hard spot in the batting that doesn't allow the machine to move smoothly. Just my observations. Anybody else experiencing this?

I too had "dead spots", where the machine just goes in a straight line, for no apparant reason as you're sewing along. My dealer sugested the classic solutions. After checking off All the normal reasons (thread on wheel, cable catching, cord catching, cleaning tracks, etc.) I solved the problem by
1. leveling the frame as perfectly as I could get it to be level, in all directions.
2. Took off the silver track rails and switched around the ends, to get the smoothest joins I could get with the different combinations of ends to ends.
3. Inserted new black track pieces.
This improved things 1,000%, now all I feel is the faintest little bump where the joins are, as would be expected.
It was well worth the work involved.
I also have similar problems and have been dealing with the since day 1.... almost 8 months. Between the dealers schedule and mine we have trouble getting anything done and I get the feeling now that they don't want to do anything else.... I had a $2000 Juki/Grace that handled better than this!!!!

My frame had mis-aligned pre-drilled holes for the brackets. Also the wheels on my carriage DO NOT TOUCH the frame at all times. They finally changed the brackets a few weeks ago and that did help the problems whenever the wheels would be over any portion over where the table sections meet. But now I am experiencing this in different places - one dead center! I did check and the front right and left rear wheels were not touching the track. Mine is more of a curve away from where I want to go instead of a flat line.... Even with ruler work.

It is difficult because it is not every square inch of the quilt. You really have to be doing detailed work and then you hit those areas that I call "hitting a swinging bridge" where you have not control over the machine.

I invested in the Fusion with the intent of starting a home business but looks like I just threw away a bundle of money.....

Why is HQ NOT taking care of these problems with their reps? My rep acts like she has never heard of any similar problems and I check here and what do you know.....

I am sorry that you are having problems with your HQ24 Fusion. If your wheels are not touching the track your track may not be completely aligned. You can re-align the track by loosening all the track bolts and then move your machine and carriage along the track to make sure it is in the correct position. Once you are satisfied with the way your wheels touch the track start at one end of the track and move your machine to the first set of bolts. Tighten these bolts and then continue moving the machine along the track tightening each set of bolts until all the track bolts have been tightened.

If this does not solve your problem I would like you to call Handi Quilter at 1-877-697-8458 and ask to speak with our HQ Technical Soutions team.

I hope this helps and that you are quilting up a strom very soon.

Good Luck,

I have been in contact with one of your reps and currently await a new carriage... We have adjusted the tracks as instructed and it the machine is handling much better. I do still have areas that don't appear to be level. Just laying my husband's level on the track, I do get an area of sunlight showing exactly in the area that I have control issues on this quilt top.

I posted a short video clip to my blog:

http://threadtalesfromascrappyquilter.blogspot.com/2011/04/bump-in-track.html

you can see the ruler raising up and down in that section! We will be calling back on Monday to see what else can be done...

I sent this information on to our technicians. Hopefully that will help shed some light into what is happening. I hope the new carriage will make the difference for you. If it does not, call and talk to one of our tech. Maybe seeing the video will help them.
Good luck!

I sent the video you took to Mike from our technical solutions department. He told me that the only thing that would cause that is a mis-adjusted table. He thinks that a section of the tracks are too close together and the carriage is rocking right there. Please call and talk to Mike at 877-697-8458, Monday-Friday 8:00 AM-5:00 PM MT. He can help you figure out what to do to check and see if that is the problem.
