I couldn't figure out how to do a poll, but would love to hear what everyone does and why :)
Hi Lindaquilts,
I'm interested to find out what the other quilters do also. I usually free hand my quilts. It's like drawing and find it very relaxing. Recently, I tried doing pantographs and like the finished results but found it more stressful. It seems to take a lot more time and not knowing if the thread had broken or if you've run out of bobbin is another issue. It is something to get used to. A good thing about doing free hand, you can avoid a bulky seem or ease in a block that doesn't exactly fit. I do a lot of quilting for other people and their quilts are somewhat of a challenge. Hope you get a big response.
Great idea, Lindaquilts. I am with Donna--freehand is more relaxing, gives more flexibility and is much faster. I have figured out how to make loops, and a sort of spiral, and even throw in an occasional heart or star, as well as just meandering. (Not that difficult to do.) I've used groovy boards, too and they definitely take more time but give a nice result. I'm getting ready to do my first paper pattern--I traced it off a tile at a hotel. That should be interesting. I will watch the DVD AGAIN before I start.

I did one quilt for someone else and was a nervous wreck wondering if it would be good enough or if she'd like it. I plan on sticking to my own stuff for now.
I also think free motion is much more relaxing. I ordered a DVD called "The Pajama Quilter", by Dawn Ramirez and it is fabulous. She shows you how to do so many free hand things and you practice on a dry erase board. It's worth the money. I haven't liked the way my quilting looks when I use the pantographs. They just don't flow smoothly. We are our own worst critics. I keep practicing with the light on and the machine off trying to get the smoothness of free motion. Practice, practice, practice.
I also enjoy freehand (free motion) the best. I really haven't done any pantos--will probably get a few soon just to try, but that is not what I want to specialize in. I really want to do just custom work, freehand work...I think pantos would be too boring for me....
I quilt for other people and about 25% of those want pantographs because it is cheaper than custom. So far, no one has asked for just a freehand all over design. I enjoy the custom work for the creative challenge of fitting the quilting to the quilt. I also enjoy the pantos. The result is pleasing and I can zone out while doing the repetitive design. I have adapted to the sound of the machine and can usually tell when the bobbin has run out. I don't have much of a problem with thread breakage. I think there is a place for all of the quilting techniques. I try all kinds on my own stuff before offering it for hire. Happy Quilting!
I like pantos for the even spacing overall and no thinking required! I ordered one of the first HQ's (my sweet sixteen) and a stitch regulator wasn't available. To do a good freehand overall, I have to stop and think sometimes about my next move......not good with a non-regulated machine. Now that I have upgraded I will probably do more freehand as I can stop for a moment and think without stitch being too long or too short.

However, sometimes I just want to turn the music on and quilt away....for that, pantos are the best for me.

what is a "poll?"
Thanks.
