I'm fairly new to the long arm experience. I heard that some quilters float the quilt top. Is there an advantage to this?

I float and love it. It takes much less time to load and, I feel that, I have more control over the batting and top. You have to stay stitch the sides thou, but worth the effort. Good luck

Yes, you can float your quilt top. It is a personal preference. Are you talking a full float, meaning that your quilt top is hanging completely and not attached to the roller at all. If you choose to float your quilt you will need to make sure that you are keeping your quilt square each time you roll. You need to stabilize your sides as you roll. You should always stabilize your quilt sides even if you load you top onto the rollers.

Yes, I was thinking of a full float. The technique may help my tendency to have too much tension on the quilt with the rollers. Thanks for the advice - I'll give it a try on my next quilt.
