Has anybody tried not rolling up the quilt top?

| In reading a book about long-arm quilting systems, the author claims she doesn't roll up the quilt top, only the backing. Says that way she can adjust the top and batting as she goes. I have a quilt top ready to load and I'm half afraid to try her method. Has anyone done a quilt this way? I'd like to try but if someone has had problems I sure would welcome some input before I (maybe) make a big mistake. Thanks can you help me? |

Phyllis Yes we do this, it is called a full float. We have quilted both ways and my Mother and I prefer the full float method now. Don't be afraid to try just strap the end and sew across the top to secure and you should pin both left and right borders as you go to keep secure the when ready to roll unpin the sides and re pin when ready to quilt again. Let me know how this works for you. Sandy from Sunnyland |

When I first read this I thought you meant not rolling on the take up roller.....duh.. Yes, I also do a full float sometimes I use clamps on the roller that the top should be rolled on and adjust that way... and sometimes at the end I will pin the top to the roller as I am finishing... also take out the pins if I have pinned it when I get to the last border to quilt unless I'm turning the quilt... I prefer floating the top Judy |

| OK ladies, I can only imagine you mean you are not rolling the top on the take up roller, but I know that's wrong. What do you mean? How is the quilt top moving along? This sounds very intriguing to me... |

you don't roll the top on the bar by the bar that has the backing on it. you pin your backing to the backing bar, and to the take up bar. you do your batting the regular way, and you lay your top on top of the batting (under the bar it should be rolled on) and baste across the top just like usual. so now your top is hanging down just like your batting. and is getting rolled up on the take up bar as you progress on the quilt, just like it would if it was pinned I'm doing this now on a quilt, and I'm very pleased with this method. |

| I also float all my quilt tops. After attaching the backing to both bars, I line up the batting at the top, letting it fall in front of the table. Then I do likewise with the quilt top. I pin it carefully along the top edge, then stitch it in place across the very top. I use the side clamps, and often pin the sides as I go. I do check the backing with each advance to be sure there are no tucks underneath. I also smooth out batting and quilt top with each advance. You develop your own system, and will get the hang of it. I've had my machine for over three years now, and continue to love it. |

| I just finished doing a float top and did not like the results. But I had to try it as it sounded great. But we all like different things. I had my prostitcher shipped to me today, so I will be doing alot of quilt tops playing with my new toy. Can't wait. |
