HELP---new problem with top thread breaking!

| Hi, this is my second time to post here---(I love this forum) I already did some searches here and am going to try a couple of things, but in the meantime wanted to ask for advice---I just recently got the whole thread flossing thru the disc thing down pat and finished a quilt just fine---put another one on and now am having the problem of the top thread being too tight and not pulling thru the needle! I didnt change anything but the thread, but its a good quality that I have used before. It seems to be not pulling thru the needle even before I try quilting. I have checked and rechecked threading, flossing, changed needles, etc.....IF it is lint or something between the discs, which is what it sounds like, how do I clean that out?? I remember reading something here about what to use, but cant find the post. THANK YOU!!!! |

| Try pulling the discs apart a bit with your fingers and blow or have someone put the vacuum nozzle around them. Is it too tight to pull just before you thread the needle? Make sure there is nothing impeding the thread cone from moving on the spindle. Also, just as a head's up, I thought I was threading my machine correctly but discovered that I was re-threading it wrong each time. Get the instructions out and follow step by step. Sometimes we fool ourselves. Just had a thought, is this thread thicker than the last? Maybe you need to move into a bigger needle. That was one of my hair pulling solutions. Good Luck. Let us know. |

| PROBLEM SOLVED! First of all, grandampeg, thank you so much for your help----all of your suggestions were totally helpful, but it turned out being the tension dial! I feel so stupid as I thought I was checking this and had it right, and low and behold I hadnt loosened it enough! What happened was, I took a break because it was getting so frustrating, and I went into the kitchen and baked a pie for a friend, and I was doing that I remembered what someone at HQ16 had told me recently in regards to tension-----she said turn back the dial all the way to the start---(as far as it will go) and then loosen it 7 complete rounds---well I did that and guess what, everything was fine---the thread immediately felt like what it was supposed to. I hope this helps someone else too, as it seems like we are always learning. And I totally could relate when you said to start over and rethread----I have done that too, where I thought I was threading it right and looked back at the book, and realized I wasnt. I have referred to that book alot lately--especially in the troubleshooting section! I have never mechanically inclined at all, and now I feel like I have had a crash course in 'fixing things' because of HQ! It feels good when you finally solve the problem and get the machine going again!!! Now I dont want to stop! |

I have been having problems with my top thread breaking and I am happy to see all this good advice. I planning on trying most of them this evening as I am trying to get some charity quilts completed. However, Phyl mentioned a something I did not understand. What is flossing? Thanks for your assistance! |

| When you put your thread through the tension disc, take a hold of the thread on both sides and move it back and forth like you would with floss on your teeth. It's to make sure the thread is in the correct place for the correct tension. Hope this answers your question. |

| Thanks Grandmapeg. I will try this. I was thinking that maybe flossing was running waxed dental floss through the needle eye. :) I tried some of the other things last night and made some progress, then my thread started to shread again. I am using a varigated thread. Other than the flossing, do you have any other suggestions? |

blackdevine31, Did you try changing your needle. Sometimes if the needle isn't in exactly right you can shred the thread. |

blackdevine31, Move your thread post and position it to the front of the machine (directly up from the needle). Thread the machine from that point (not from the back). A rep told me that when using varigated thread. Cathie |
