help! top thread not catching the bobbin thread

| I am just getting started with my handiquilter. I can't get the top thread to pick up the bobbin thread. I had a new needle and just changed to another new one. It seems like the hook is not catching the top thread, so there is no stitch occurring. I would appreciate any help you can give me. |

Make sure that your hopping foot is going down to the fabric (mine was sticking in the up position and I had to manually push it down). Make sure you have enough thread coming out of the bobbin case. Sometimes you have to take the bobbin out and put it in again to make sure the thread is going through the tension. Hope this helps. Donna |

HELP!! I have been quilting all day on a quilt. No problems. Went to change the bobbin, dropped a drop of oil in the bobbin housing. Now, I can't get the bobbin thread to come up. So, I did some investigating...the needle is hitting the bobbin housing. I can see it missing the hole for the housing. Has anyone ever had this problem? And, is there any way to adjust the housing? Thanks-- |

That doesn't sound good. Did you check to see if your bobbin is snapped all the way in? No lint or anything keeping it from snapping into place? Is there a possibility that the housing has slipped somehow? Maybe your needle is bent? I am sure you are checking everything; when you find out the problem, let us know. All information and help are good. Best of Luck Lynette |

Thanks Lynette for the checklist of things to do...I did all those. I am pretty certain that the housing has slipped, and the first call of the morning tomorrow will be to the shop where I got the machine. I am lucky too in that if I have to I can run up to the Handiquilter place and get an answer!! Thanks, and I'll keep you all posted. Myrna |

Hi Myrna, Hope you are back to quilting again. I just wanted to let you and all the others know about what happened to me. I had been quilting on my HQ16 for about a year and never had this happen before. My friend asked me to quilt something for her and gave me thread to use. Unfortunately, I don't remember the name of the thread but when I wound the bobbin until it stopped and put it into the bobbin case, the bobbin had expanded and stuck out from the case. It snapped into the housing but wouldn't let the thread go through properly. I took some of the thread off of the bobbin and then everything worked fine. It was a very fine thread but the fact that it made the bobbin expand was weird. Has anyone experienced this? |

Here's the result of a visit to the repair man...my timing is WAY off. I told him that it wasn't nice to tease me about my age!! LOL!! The repairman said that he could fix it in about a WEEK!! Great...I have a quilt on the quilter that has about 8" left to do!! I haven't ever had the problem with the thread that you are talking about. Interesting little things aren't they??? |

| Myrna. I had the exact same thing happen to me. I took my machine in and the same thing. the timing was off. Got it back and no problems since. I too had a quilt that I had about 1/2 done. Needless to say, it was very upsetting. Glad they found your problem. Happy quilting!!!!! Debi |

Myrna, Glad you found the problem. I sympanthize with your frustration. It has to drive you crazy. Take the week and read a book (Harry Potter?), and you will be ready to go when you get your machine back. I know when mine is down I feel like I am missing an arm or leg. I will watch for the bobbin expansion. Lynette |

| Here's another wierd problem: for the last 3 bobbins I loaded, the thread comes off fast then slow, fast then slow. Its as if the thread is different thicknesses, fat and thin. I rewound with a different thread and it is ok. This was mettler thread which works fine in the top but not inthe bobbin. Strange, no? |

I am also having a problem with my top thread catching the bobbin thread. It just started to happen. It was working fine and voila all of a sudden it won't catch the thread. I changed the needle, have been struggling with the tension, checked the threading of the machine. My husband said that my language is becoming more and more threatening towards my machine. It is very frustrating to say the least.....trying to stay cool. Carole |

Well I'm back and it finally worked. What worked for me was turning the needle just a hair to catch the thread. Evidently I didn't have it in just right. When I tried turning it a little at a time it finally worked. Whew! Let's hope it keeps working. I'm quilting a dragon panel for my granddaughter with variegated thread and I really like it. Keep on a quilt-n..... |

| I have another question. It may be a stupid one. But here goes....if you have a quilt that you finished and then you take it off and want to add some quilting, how do you put it back on? Do you put it on the second roller and the last one? Does it make any difference? |

Hi Carole, There are no stupid questions. I've done what you want to do. I repin to the take up roller and the roller used for the quilt top. Works fine, just pin all three layers to the quilt top roller. Good luck. |
