HQ16 tracks failing

| Hello Expert, My white track has large pits and chunks out of it causing bumpy and jerky movement. I've already had to replace the track and don't want to keep having to do this. 1) why is this and 2) can I replace my tracks with the new steel tracks that can be ordered with the Avante? If this is possible, I imagine I'd have to buy something to put on my carriage. Or is the only way you can get this setup is buying the Studio Frame? |

I have had the same problem on my carriage tracks. I had cut the tracks on my table to make it shorter and then had to go larger. The seam bothered me so bad I ordered new track. Now I am considering using the good parts of the old table track to replace the track on the carriage. HQ - how do you recommend I remove the old carriage track and what kind of adhesive should I use to put on the new?
I have looked at the Avante and Fusion tables. You cannot use the metal tracks for those machines without replacing your carriage as they use eight wheels vice the four that we have. They have the same four wheels from the machine to the carriage but eight from the carriage to the table. |

| I've had the same problem with gouches and scratches. I'm very dissatisfied with my frame and would be interested in the better table and tracks. Is it possible to fit an HQ Sixteen to the newer table and track system? |

We have a nice sturdy table called the Studio Table that can be used with the HQ Sixteen. You would have to use that same white tracks on it because that is the track system the carriage for the HQ Sixteen uses.

| Yes, but what about the tracks flacking and chipping. I'm also having that problem. Is this something that has to be changed out every year or so. It is only happening on the carraige sections. I have a studio frame and the ones on the that are fine...... |

The white tracks on the carriage and on the HQ Sixteen tables can get worn after a time. How long have you had your machine? If you ever take the machine off the carriage for any reason, be sure to put it back onto the carriage carefully so you don't gouge the tracks. As far the the flaking, after a lot of uses that can start to happen. When you get a small gouge or some flaking, you can take a nail file or some fine sandpaper and go over these areas with it. That will smooth out the flakes or gouges.
I hope this information is helpful to you. Kathi Salter Handi Quilter Studio Educator |

Kathi,
I have had my hq16 for 1 1/2 yrs. I purchased it used. The previouse owner had just purchased a new studio frame before she sold to me. The tracks on the frame are fine. It is the tracks on the carrage assembly that came with the pro-stitcher. I had my machine updated a year ago. I have not removed the machine, I have been filing the nicks out, but they just seem to keep on coming. Am I fighting a loosing battle? I have my old carrage, should I just remove the tracks off of that and replace the chipped ones? Will I need to be doing this every year or so?....thanks for any insight Linda |

| You should not be having to replace your tracks every year. Check to see if the wheels are rubbing on the edge of the track to the carriage and causing it to gradually shave pieces of the track off. You can definitely use the tracks from your old carriage and put them on your new carriage. Be sure to align them up correctly with the wheels on the machine. If you are still having the same issues with the tracks after you exchange them, call Handi Quilter and let's see if we can figure out what is happening. I wanted to share why my white tracks were failing. I live in sunny Arizona, my tracks failed due to the sunlight breaking down the plastic track. I found that the only place it didn't fail is where the sun could not cast its' sunshine. I love the HQ products but like any manmade product, there are issues to overcome.

| I had thought of that also, but the sun doesn't hit them. I live in Vegas so we have all the windows shaded and keep the blinds closed. I've looked aqt the wheels qnd they seem ok. I'll change out the tracks and go from there...thanks Linda ;-) |

Dear HQ family, Please address the failing tracks issue. I thought it was resolved with the sunlight theory, it is not. I bought the Fusion, the carriage tracks failed within a few months of daily use.
I know that you know the white tracks are not performing for your customers. This is the only issue that, in my mind, keeps the HQ products from being the very BEST longarm on the market. I am surprised that we don't hear from HQ customer care team, "we know this is an issue and we are working to improve the track performance." Your very loyal customer, Connie Kelsey |

Thank you Brenda for your reply, I truly appreciate knowing where HQ stands my concern. I'm not sure what to say, I guess I just think my tire should last longer. I don't pop wheelies, drive it up on the curb or leave it in the rain. I lovingly care for her and hope to have her a very long time, or at least until HQ comes out with something new (shhh, don't tell my husband).
My fabulous dealer, Richard, set my new Fusion up, so I know it was done right. So, if no one else is having this issue, the commonality is 'ME'. or what can I do to improve the life of my track. I'll try the emery cloth. Since most of the pitting happens on the right track and in the middle, I'll try running my patterns to the full extent of the throat to even out the ruts. Since I know that HQ is always striving to have the finest product on the market, I feel confident that you will keep your eyes open on this issue. Warmest regards, Connie Kelsey |

| I too have failing white tracks, but mine are on the carriage of a fusion. It appears parts of the tracks flake off without being knocked and some of the chips are quite deep. I had already worked out that sandpaper worked reasonably well in smoothing them. I have quilted 70 quilts on these tracks, so it's disappointing they don't last longer, but like you, I love the HQ machine also. I am communicating with my technician over this issue, so hopefully I will be quilting smoothly again in no time! |

I have had my studio frame with the Hq 16 for 23 months. I do not take the machine off the frame and I have never had the machine bounce or gouge the tracks. The pitting or chipping I have is not on the carriage but on the 12' track on the needle side of the machine. I have had this happen in about 7 different spots so it is quite aggravating. I understand that this is a common problem since I talked to a customer serv rep and she said that it was a common issue. I read over the possible causes and I see no reason that this would have happened to the track on my machine. I am also upset because I was not told that this would be a regular expense that I would have.

I'm chiming in on the track failing comments. I had to replace all my tracks (HQ16-21 months old--over 10 million stitches on the counter)about 2 months ago. We have at least 20 HQ16 users in the Northern VA area and at least 4 of us have had to replace our tracks.
It would be nice if the tracks were more durable. Also, I would love to know if the Edgerider wheels make any difference to the life of the tracks? I love my HQ when the tracks are smooth. Thank you! |

Diane,
I am sorry to hear you are having problems with your tracks. I cannot comment on the edgerider wheels because they are not a Handi Quilter product and I am not familiar with them. I am passing your concerns onto our engineers. Thank you for your comments. Cheryl Duncan Handi Quilter Studio Educator |
