Well... I finally got my tension issues worked out, and I quilted my first quilt yesterday. I used the spirals groovy boards. The first problem I had was, a few times, my gb stylus came out of the grooves.... does anyone have a suggestion for that? how do I keep that from happening? I sure thought I had it down in there good enough.

then, OF COURSE! my bobbin ran out! and then that messed up the tension, and then I had a whole row of loops to pick out, and then it took a good while to get it all straightened out again. but once I got it all figured out, I finished the quilt in no time.

Now, I just really need to watch the DVD set to get all those tips, and how to line up your rows with the pantos or groovy boards.....
Congratulations. It's a great feeling isn't it? I've never tried to do pantographs or groovy boards and I applaud you for attempting it for your first quilt. I've thought about using some of the pantographs I have and chicken out because either they don't fit the border or there are too many borders. I think I'm just too lazy.
I'm wondering why the tension got messed up because you ran out of bobbin. Once you have the tension under control, putting in a new bobbin shouldn't change things. Maybe you didn't get the thread in the tension area of the bobbin all the way. Just a thought. Keep on quilting.
Donna, I think that was the problem, something caused my thread to get messed up, and it wasn't in the tension dohickeys right any more... and maybe I didn't get the bobbin in right or something... and then all of that made me worry my needle was messed up, so I put in a new one, and I must not have gotten it in far enough or something....

ANYWAY, I finally got it all straightened out, and that's a good thing! There's no telling WHAT I did to mess it all up in the first place!
It has happened to me too. It's funny how one little thing happens and it keeps getting bigger and bigger. I try to think of the first thing I did before things started to go wrong and check there first. I find myself talking to the machine...like what do you want now? I gave you a new bobbin - what more do you want? She seems to understand that I have to do this - after all - she is my best friend. Have fun.
LOL... I was talking to mine too, but not in such a nice way!

it is true, one small thing goes off kilter, then before you know it, it is a big mess! I need to try to not get so frustrated, and start trying to fix things, and THINK about what the problem is right then, and maybe it won't turn into a big mess!
Stay calm and enjoy yourself. Remember, if I can do it, you can do it. And believe me, if I can do it, ANYBODY can do it.
I put a baby quilt panel on the machine last night, and practiced stippling, and I must say, I was tickled to death with it.... My stippling on my Bernina (NOT THE BERNINA'S FAULT!) has been hideous!

so.... at least I know I will be able to do that much on the HQ! =)
I have been reading this forum now for about a month and it has been very interesting. I am picking up my new machine on Monday and can't wait to try it out. This will be my first time using a long arm and will probably need alot of help from everyone. You all seem to be very willing to give a helping hand.
country, hope you have as much fun as the rest of us!
