I am new with the HQ (have HQ 16 on the portable/extendable table) and am having great difficulty getting to make the machine go where I tell it to. Particularly when doing pantographs, I feel like the machine has a little mind of its own. I can hardly follow the lines, no matter how slow or fast I go. It seems to want to jump or veer off. My circles (as in holly circles) are never circles, and trying to retrace a line is almost impossible. I'm wondering if it's the operator just not practiced enough, or could there be a mechanical reason? Has anyone else had this problem?
Hi! You didn't say how long you've had your HQ16. I've had mine since May and am only just starting to get smooth results. However, I did have a problem at first with my table, then my tracks not being level. This caused jerky movements. So, try using a carpenter's level to make sure your table is level, and correct by adjusting the feet. Then, if your tracks are bowing a little, try using two sided carpet tape to glue it down. I could not use the sticky things they sent with the machine. They were too fat, and actually made lumps under the tracks. Try these things, and if that isn't the problem, be patient with yourself! There is a huge learning curve. Just remember: The longer it takes to learn something, the greater your accomplishment when you finally "get" it! Good luck and HAVE FUN!
Thanks, Mollywog. I've had mine about the same amount of time, but probably have not practiced as much as I should have...mostly because I get discouraged before I feel like I'm getting anywhere. I'm usually not such a slow learner, so it's frustrating. I did check for levelness and it looks to be okay, although the machine head does want to travel on it's own at some spots when let loose. (That's what precipitated checking for levelness.) As for the tracks, they may not be exactly straight on the table by maybe a 1/4 inch. My dealer put it together, so I assumed all would be well in that area. She did use those 3M sticky things that can be removed easily, so maybe that could be an issue, like you said. I'll see about the carpet tape instead. I'm going to the dealer's today for a class, so I think I'll take my holly pantograph and see if she'll let me try it on her machine. Then if I get the same result...I know it's the operator's error! If so, at least I'll know and won't feel like my practice is futile. Boy, I thought this looked so easy when someone else was doing it!!
