Marking a quilt

| I'd like to know if anyone has found a good marking tool/method for use with stencils. I've tried a few different things but I'm not happy with any of them. I like the silver/white/yellow pencils for marking grid lines, etc. but these never seem to fit properly in the stencil "slots". The pencils with the interchangeable chalk sticks are way too fat. I saw someone on TV using a foam brush and with loose chalk. Tried it....big mess. Suggestions? Also do most of you mark as you go or do you mark the whole quilt before loading it? |

As far as when I mark, it just depends on the quilt itself. If I'm doing cross hatching, I usually mark before I load it. I like using MIRACLE CHALK and the ponce pad for marking with stencils. You can use this mark as you go or premark before loading. It does take a LONG TIME to get the pounce pad filled, but once you do, it's good to go! I also use the blue chalk and pounce pad for marking but only mark as you go since it doesn't stay on while rolled on the pole. I also use Quilters Marking Pencils by EZ QUILT. they are in white and silver and they do a very good job on the stencils but you would have to premark your quilt before loading it. Roxanne's has a very good pencil as well. You have to be very careful with sharpening these pencils since the leads are very soft. Hope this helps. |

Thanks for the suggestions crashnquilt. I've heard about pouncers but I haven't seen them in any of the stores where I usually shop. (Maybe because I wasn't looking for them). So the Miracle Chalk doesn't rub off if you do the whole quilt before you load it? MJ from MD |

One of my customers turned me onto a pen from "the thimble lady" and it is good. It think that is thethimblelady.com I have not had a lot of luck with pounce, but maybe I haven't stayed with it. My Mom always just used a piece of chalk that she sharpened with sandpaper. that is good but be careful. I recently used yellow so I could see it and it did not want to come out. It will come out when washed but no everyone wants to wash their quilts before they give them. |

Chaz, On the website www.quilterstouch.com under the tips section is a formula for removing pencil and chalk marks. You can spray the quilt block right after you get done quilting it and the marks should disappear. You may have to rub it a bit with a washcloth. The trick to the pounce is to RUB it on the stencil. You need to use a bit of a scrubbing action. If you use the MIRACLE CHALK (only available in white) it stays on the quilt until removed with a steam iron or washing. I've had really good luck with it so far. But like I said, you really have to work the chalk into the pad before you can use it. I worked the chalk in for about an hour, let it set for a couple of days, and then worked it again for about 30 minutes. If you mark with the regular chalk, after you get the design onto the quilt, you can spray it with hairspray to get the chalk to stick, then spritz with water after you've finished quilting. I always was my quilts before giving them because I want to see what it looks like after washing. I have had some quilts look pretty bad after washing due to various degrees of shrinkage in fabrics and batting and backing. Even if I have prewashed all the fabrics, I do wash it when I'm done. |

Clover makes a good marking tool that looks like a tube of lipstick, it has a little wheel in the end and it comes in several different colors of chalk. Works good on stencils and if you spray with hairspray it will stay on till washed or will just brush off when you get finished. I mark my quilt as I go. General makes a real good chalk pencil . Happy Quilting! |

Hey Thanks Crash and Vicki for the tips. I will sure go over and see what quilters touch has to say, I go over there often but guess I missed that one. And I think by your post that I am not getting enough pounce on and definately not scrubbing probably why it doesn't show and I can't see it. Thanks again you guys. Several heads are better than one.......lol |
