I have always met my customers here at home where they can see my pantos, groovy boards etc. I have decided to do what other longarmers do - meet my customers at the quilt shop. My questions is: How do you show your quilt designs to others? I was thinking maybe a "cloth book" and each page has a quilted design. I just want to look as professional out as I do at home. HELP! And thanks for any advice.
Hey Vicki. I'm wondering why you think it is better to meet them at the LQS? I know MANY longarmers who have the customers come to their studio, whether it's in their home or elsewhere...

Personally, I think it would be best to have them come where you have samples to show them.

That's not to say that you couldn't from time to time meet at another location if it is more convenient for you and your customer.
I quilt part time and work full time. I have out of town customers meet me during my lunch hour, at McDonalds for example, because it is more convenient than coming to my house which is way out in the country. I carry a loose leaf notebook that contains my order forms, calculator, thread charts, and photocopies of my pantographs. I originally tried to use fabric samples but that quickly became too cumbersome as my selection of pantos increased. I do include in my book some photos taken of custom work. My customers appreciate my willingness to meet them and save them from having to drive out into the country at night after work. It is no big inconvenience for me either. I have brought samples if I am meeting a new client and they request it.
Monkeymom - I do quilting for my lqs and I meet the customer there where they pick out their backing. If I am given the quilts to quilt I am to meet them there. I do have regular customers who I meet here at the house. I did make up a fabric book of samples as well as my folder with pics of my quilts I've done. It worked out really well when I went this week and I picked up 3 more quilts from the shop instead of the 1 that I was suppose to pick up. So going into the shop is definately worth it for me - the owner is my friend but it is still good to go in and get more work. Plus I need girlfriend time - working out of the house can be a lonely job - so I love going there - it is the best place to visit! Also, when I am in the shop I meet potential customers. The shop has a Gammill with a Statler so she could just give the work to her longarmer so I gotta keep myself visible. All longarmers here meet their customers at various shops - whoever they are affiliated with - I have 2 shops that give me work. I'm half way between Orlando and Daytona - maybe our area is a little different than other areas....... safety wise I 'm thinking. Most of the customers are closer to Orlando and the shop is half way between me and Orlando so it works out better for the customers. Anyway, thanks for the advice - I truly appreciate it!
