Does anyone have the original HQ leaders for the Handiquilter II frame? Leaders didn't come with my frame (bought used) and I need to make some. I bought some sturdy cotton pillow ticking to make them and am trying to decided how wide to make them. Also, do you make them double fabric or single? Also, do you sew the velcro to the top or underside of the leader? |

Your HQII frame requires 3 leaders, one for the quilt back, quilt top, and take-up poles. If you havent done so already, set up your frame in a length that works in your room. You didnt say whether or not the previous owner affixed the Velcro hook-side tape to the polls. The instructions for attaching the hook-side tape require making a tick mark on each end of the polls, 6 in from the inside edge of the side supports, then attaching the tape between the two marks. The width of your leaders needs to be length of the hook tape. The supplied HQ leaders are single thickness, serged on all sides, with the loop-side of the tape along one long edge. Im in the process of making a second set of leaders for my frame. My fabric is single thickness with double-fold hems on all four sides. For my sides and one long edge (loop tape edge) I made a turn and then a full turn. On the edge that will be pinned to the quit, I made a turn then a full 2 That gives me plenty of room to pin, without ever hitting all the thickness along sewn edge. How the leaders hang off the polls will determine on which side to place the Velcro loop tape, if you only want to see the finished side when you attach your leader to your quilt. If you didnt receive the instructions for attaching the leaders to the polls, the two front leaders, quilt back and quilt top polls, the leaders are attached so each hangs between the two polls. On the take-up poll, the leader hangs off the back-side. Given this attachment scenario, the Velcro loop tape would be attached to the front (finished) side of the quilt top and take-up leaders, and to the back (double-fold) side of the backing leader. This will insure the finished side is always facing up when you pin to your quilt. Not making the leaders poll specific is likely whey HQ chose to serge all the edges which is perfectly acceptable. If you or a friend own a serger, that would make the construction easier and quicker. The length of the leader needs to be long enough to reach the tabletop so you can easily pin them to your quit sections. Mine are 20 long, finished length. Velcro purchased in small packages can be expensive in the length you will likely need, and its difficult to find only the loop side, if thats all you want. I found a Website that sells Velcro brand tapes on large rolls, sew-on or adhesive, at an amazing price. You can purchase a roll of the full set (hook and loop), or only the hook or loop side. Shipping was very fast http://www.textol.com/textol.asp They do require a minimum order of $35.00. In addition to Velcro they also have a drapery construction needs with loads of notions, markers, pins, etc, so coming up with a $35.00 order wasnt difficult. Good luck and enjoy your frame. |
