Any one have an opinion on needle size to use on batiks? The fabric is so tightly woven I was looking for someone's experience before I start. Thanks.
Peg,

I am in the process of doing a batik quilt (front and back) quilt right now. I read in a lot of places to use a size 18 needle because of the fabric density and I tried that but found the holes to be larger than my liking. I switched to size 16 and it is going perfectly fine. I am using a King Tut variegated thread on top and a pre-wound super bob bobbin in the bottom.

Thanks for the info. As soon as this broken arm heals I'm off and quilting. Beware, all that looks like water could be ice! Have a great day.
Grandmapeg - ack! You fell on ice? Ack! I cringed when I read that because my dear mom did the same thing. She was going for a walk in the woods through the snow and stopped on some bark dust to tighten her shoelace and whoop bam! She had stopped on ICE, fell, and ended up hurting herself very badly. I hope you heal quickly.

About batiks and needles, I found size 16 works great and have used Superior's Highlights and love the results.

Hope this helps.
Michelle,
Beautiful quilting on the batik. Did you use a pantograph, or are you one of those beautiful free hand quilters?
Thanks.
Thank you. I haven't tackled pantographs yet. I find free motion a lot more interesting and I prefer to work in front of the quilt and really watch what I'm doing.
Thanks for the information on batiks. I have heard horror stories but still have plans on making a quilt out of batiks. I am wondering though....what kind of backing did you all use?
I usually use batik front and back......I also prefer a 16 or 18. any bigger makes ugly big holes. I have never really had a problem with batik as long as I keep a sharp needle in. I have had to change needles twice while on a big quilt. I think one of the biggest mistakes we make, that causes us all kinds of problems is not changing the needle more often.
What is the smallest needle I can use in my HQ 16???
I want to quilt my hand dyed Pimatex from Kaufman and not make big holes. Thank you.
Hi Daren, I use a 16 for Batiks and it works great. However, if you want to try a smaller needle, change threads to a fine thread and maybe slow down a bit. Good luck Daren, let us know how things work out. Connie

Darren,

The smallest size needle that we sell at Handi Quilter is a size 14. If you use this small of a needle make sure that you use a finer thread so that it will fit in the groove and eye of the needle.

Good Luck,
