New Purchaser with Leader Question on Portable Table Set Up

What is the correct way to handle excess leader material when table is set up for smaller than king size? The guy who did my installation just folded it back and pinned it, but this seems that it would affect the smooth rolling up of the back and top. Am I just not getting it or was that the wrong way to do it? I am tempted to just cut off the excess and buy more when I eventually set it up for king size. Also, along that line, he set up the table with the one large insert, instead of the two smaller inserts. The instructions (that I read later) said to insert the two smaller inserts for queen size and add the large insert for king size. The way he set it up is 6" shorter than it should be. My quilting space is only 82". And, another also, what all is supposed to be included in that 3 hour training? I got the set up and very basic, cursory machine instructions (some of which were wrong), e.g., threading, bobbin, screen menu, laser light placement, etc. He forgot to bring material, so went to Wal Mart and bought a sheet that he cut in half and fiber fill (which obviously didn't work). He loaded the sheet explained what he was doing, but didn't make it very clear. I love the machine and don't regret my purchase, but wish I had gone to a different dealer. Most of what I've learned has been here or elsewhere on the internet. |

| I just trimmed my leader and saved the extra and serged the raw edge. When you set up for a king quilt just add the small extra pieces to the end of your big leader. Or buy more but that seems silly. Not all dealers are created equal. My dealer does not set up but gave a really good 3 hour class. The directions and CD from HQ will help you take your table apart and put it up the way you want it. It really helps with loading the quilt, too. If you're really unhappy with the service you got, call him or even better, call HQ. Don't let this get you down. Think of all the fun you will have with your machine in the future. Load some muslin and start quilting. |

| Thanks, Grandmapeg - I believe I will just cut the excess leader off--I hadn't thought about sewing them back on, but that would certainly work! I eventually get stuff loaded (watch the video, pause, load the back; watch the video, pause, load the top; but it usually takes a couple of tries before I get the take-up bar pinned correctly! I finally drew myself a cheat sheet to consult next time. I do enjoy my practice sessions and can see progress. I've enjoyed browsing through all the forum topics and learning the answers to questions I didn't know to ask! |

| Don't bother sewing it back on, just attach it next to the big piece on the pole. I've had my machine since last December and still have to stop and think about which way to roll the quilt top and back. Stop and check the instructions and then you don't make as many mistakes. None of us is perfect but we get better at hiding our mistakes. A mistake is just a new way to quilt! Good Luck! |

I wrote on the leaders reminders like "pin wrong side to this side" right next to the center mark I made on my leaders. I marked each leader so I can get them on correctly the first time. (When I am paying attention, it works! :) Jean |

| I cut the excess leader material off and my new practice setup rolled on much better. I will definitely write the reminders on the leaders--good idea! Maybe that will help on those days that I just can't get my brain in gear. I sure am having fun practicing! I'm looking forward to my thread shipment so I can start on one of my real "practice quilts." |
