does anyone else have a noisy machine? I put the new upgrade on and now its even noisier and making a kind of loud humming / annoying noise too. If I really concentrate I can tune it out, but is it supposed to be this noisy? The new one at the shop I bought this one from, is actually very quiet, thats why I am a bit concerned.

I've had my machine for over a year and went from using a Janome 6500P on a Big Grace frame to using the HQ16 on the Big Grace frame that was converted to accommodate the HQ16. I think it is loud. When I tested the HQ16 at quilt shows and in a show room, I thought it was a quiet machine. When mine was being serviced, I ran it in the show room and it didn't seem loud but it does at home. It is probably because we are using it in a much smaller room with lower ceilings. I've read that people say they put on their music and just sew away. I know that the music would have to be much to loud for me to enjoy it while sewing.

I'm thinking about getting the upgrades but certainly don't want to add to the noise. Please keep us informed. I hope that other upgrade users will let us know what they experience.
My machine seems noisy when I use the stitch regulator. When I have the regulator turned off it does seem much quieter and sometimes easier to run.
I'll try running it without the stitch reg. one time, just to see if that helps, but that would defeat the purpose of buying the regulator in the first place, wouldn't it? I can't even turn on some music, as I have to turn it on so loud and that is annoying when I stop to roll the quilt. I'm hoping that after it is oiled that maybe that will help....??? I'll know this weekend if all goes well.

I just got my machine back from service and oiling,...WOW what a difference !! Its like a different machine. Very quiet !! Sounds like a new machine again. It is reccomended that we service and oil the machine once a year as with our home machines, and even tho my dealer doesn't adhere to this rule, I now think it is a good one and will adhere to it myself from now on. I also recieved my new edgerider wheels in the mail, so I'll be putting those on later today. I'm a happy gal !!!
Hi Petsitr2,
What are edgerider wheels? My machine was recently serviced and I still think it is noisey. I'd like to listen to music while I quilt but the music would have to be too loud. I'm glad that your machine is quiet.
edgerider wheels are an updated wheel that apparently gives more control and runs smoother. My wheels are leaving black / gray matter on my tracks and I'm guessing they are worn out. I have heard lots of good things about the edgeriders so I thought I would try them. I don't have them on yet and I doubt if they alone will help with the noise. My machine was apparently in serious need of oiling, and my dealer thought it should be done every 2 years, when in actuallity it needs to be serviced every 1 year. So I will be getting mine serviced every year from now on. I am amazed at the difference in the noise and how it runs.
Hi Petsitr2,
I replaced my wheels when I first heard about them. I hadn't had my machine very long (maybe about a month) when I purchased the new wheels so I can't say that I noticed the difference but I really like quilting on it. My machine was a year old in April. I'm getting black/gray matter on my tracks too. It must be from use. I also had a piece of the track peel off. It doesn't interfer with how the machine works so I guess it doesn't matter. I did tell my dealer about it and will watch to see if any more comes off. How is it going with the upgrades? I just heard from my dealer (I'm thinking about adding the upgrades) and he told me that if the machine was more that a year old, I would have to purchase a different pod. He said to look into the area where you plug your machine in (at the back of the machine - right side ) and if the inside of the female part is black, you will need the new pod because the upgrades won't work properly without it. Unfortunately, my machine will need the new pod. If the area is white - you are OK.
actually all you will see there is a white dot. If you have a white dot, you won't need the other pod. My machine is almost 2 yrs. old, but I have the white dot, so I only needed the c-pod and the new handles. I bought the store demonstrator from the LQS when she got a new one. I have had it aprox. a month, she had never oiled it in the time she had it. She used it for classes and also rented it out, so obviously it needed to be oiled. But with that taken care of, I put a quilt on last night and it is running great and very quiet,at least compared to how it was. I still don;'t have the edgeriders on, but I'll get to it in a few days. There is an upgrade wheel for about 1/2 the price of the edgeriders, but everyone seems to like these so I thought I would just go for them. The edgeriders are a hard white plastic and have ball bearings in them. so I'm guessing they won't leave gray stuff on my tracks. :) Be sure to look for that white dot.

I bought my HQ 16 about two months ago and Friday got a box with a new C pod in it. I'm not sure what it's going to do for me, but I'll change it and find out. Seems like a pretty easy process.

Does anyone have any experience with the channel locks for straight line quilting? I bought two but haven't taken time to figure out how to use them.

Jean
I bought 1 and have used it and it works great. I use it to sew a straight line on the batting to hold it in place before I load the quilt. I just use the one and haven't had any problem at all. I love it.

Hi Petsitr2,
I looked again and I have a dot. Thank you. The way my dealer talked, the area should be all white. I'll explain this to him because I don't think he would want to charge people extra if he didn't have to. I really do believe he is an honest man.

As for the wheels. My wheels have a black border on the outside and are made of metal. I'm sure they have ball bearings. I'm looking at the old wheels and they are metal also but have a copper looking trim (they don't look that much different than the new ones.) Where did you find the white plastic ones? I paid $58.00 with my discount for these wheels. Really glad about this forum. Thanks to all for all the help I'm getting.
I bought the edgerider wheels at Kingsmen.com for $200.00. I saw some upgrade wheels somewhere for around $100.00 that must be what you have. You get a nice discount, it that a business discount? Maybe you would also get one at kingsmen..??? The white plastic is what will touch my track. The center is metal for the bearings tho. So hopefully no gray matter . :) My old ones are just plain old metal. I hope to get the new ones on this week. As soon as I get a quilt on I'll let you know how they are.

My discount isn't for business, it's just because I bought my machine from them (Sew-n-Vac in Illinois). They give me a 10% discount on everything I buy for my machine. My wheels probably are the $100.00 wheels and I got them for a special price because they were new and it was some sort of promotion. I'll check out Kingsmen.com. Be sure to let me know how you like your new wheels.
