t-shirt rubber decals

I've been quilting a lot of t-shirt quilts for people and am finding the rubber decals on the t-shirts frays the thread. If the thread doesn't fray and break it bounces around the tension disc and gets tangled up then breaks. Is there anything I can do to prevent this? ie. needle size, type and size of thread

The only recommendation that I would have is to make sure your needle is the correct size for the thread that you are using. If your needle is too small for the thread then that can cause shredding of the thread.
