I'm a beginner with a new system and can not get the tension right, pulling my hair out! I'm using Superior thread in top and bottom, have adjusted the top and bobbin tension until the thread breaks. I've finally got the top looking O.K., but the bottom keeps drawing a straight line, I'm working with a pano. Any suggestions?
I have a couple of suggestions! Sounds basic, but go back and make sure you have your machine threaded properly. Even a miss of one of the threading places can cause issues. Secondly, be sure you have "flossed" your thread through the tension disks. After that, check your bobbin tension. The short videos in Handiquilter's website (Click on Education) are very helpful. Your bobbin tension should be your first stop in checking stitch tensions. After you know that the bobbin tension is right, then adjust your top tension as needed. Also, make sure that your quilt sandwich is not too tight on the poles. When I started I had a tendency to tighten everything as snug as possible in an effort to keep the wrinkles out! That causes additional friction for the threads. Your sandwich should be secure but not tight/taut. You should be able to press on it and have it give.

I always load a small quilt sandwich to the machine to check my tensions before I begin stitching. That way I don't have to worry about taking out undesirable stitches on my "good" project.

There is a wealth of information on this website under Education. Don't be afraid to watch these clips over and over. They can be of help....even to a person who's done several quilts successfullty!
