I am still getting "pokies" on the top of my quilt. I have adjusted my tension until it is as good as it gets, yet I still get pokies. A lot of the forums (and even some of the pros) say use the same color thread on the top as on the bottom and pokies won't show. What about variegated thread? Sometimes you get a darker colorway on the bottom as on the top and ---walla---pokies! Also, what if it is a pictorial quilt and the image dictates the thread color? Do you quilt with mutliple colors on the back? Doesn't thing look odd? Let me know what you guys are doing. Thanks!
If I use polyester batting the pokies aren't quite so bad. You might try using a smaller needle. Also, I find if I steam over the project and rub/fluff afterwards most all the pokies are gone then.
And yes, it does look odd if different colors appear on the backside. I paid a LA quilter to quilt a quilt for me and she used two different bobbins thread and it looked weird. I was very disappointed. She said she had to do it that way because she changed the top thread in some areas.
Stoopid question: What's a pokie?
Echo--Not a stupid question, that's how we all learn. A pokie is when you can see a "dot" of the upper thread between stitches on the back or vice versa. It's not a problem when your thread is all the same color.
I tried something new (to me,anyhow) I used white thread on top and navy blue in the bobbin,to match my backing. I didn't think it would matter so much, but when I rolled the beginning section up, I had white pokies all over the place. So anyway, I'm finishing the quilt and hopefully it will look like I planned it that way. Kind of "ghost" quilting on the back;another lesson learned....
When using two colors of threads I prefer to use polyester batting. If you are just seeing very small dots, when you wash the quilt, that may take care of most of the "pokies" Also, when using different color threads you might try switching to a smaller needle. This will help. If your pokies are on the back, try tightening your needle tension, loosen if they are on top. When you are using two different colors, be sure your threads match in size and type. i.e. if you are using 40wt Rayon on top, have the same in the bobbin, this will help when adjusting tension.
Thanx Crashnquilt.....the threads are the same, just wish I'd noticed sooner. But with all that ripping, I decided to just finish the way it turned out. I thought about tightening the tension, but then it would look different and I'd still have to rip. Like I said, I learned something; besides, I kinda like it this way...adds a little "character" LOL....thanks again.
