Thread Breakage and skipped stitches

Hello experts! I recently got my hq16 back from being serviced. It was working quite nicely and I ALMOST made it through a quilt. About three quarters of the way through, the breakage and skipped stitches returned.
I am using Superior Poly Quilter thread in top and bobbin. I had a 16 needle in. I changed the needle, no luck. I changed to an 18, no luck. I put the needle at 5 o:clock - no better. It will sew towards me beautifully. When I start curving, things go downhill. I just can't think of anything else to try so hopefully you have some other suggestions. Thanks! |

I am actually very surprised that you were able to get so far in your quilt before you had issues. Superior Poly Quilter thread is a 19 weight thread (VERY thick). You would need to use a size 20 needle with this thread. The smaller the weight number, the thicker the thread.
The following is a good guide to go by when trying to decide what needle size to use: Size 14- silk (100 weight), monofilament, glitter, some metalics. Size 16- 60 weight, 50 weight, monfilament, glitter, metalics. Size 18- 50 weight, 40 weight, 30 weight, metalic. Size 20- 30 weight, 20 weight (or 19 as in your thread), 12 weight. I hope this is helpful to you. Kathi Salter Handi Quilter Studio Educator |

Oh wow, Kathi! I can't thank you enough! It says on the cone to use size 16. I guess that's for a long armer. The 20 worked beautifully. You truly made my month!

| Hi Kathi, I have about five minutes to go on my quilt and it has started skipping horribly again. It started out well this evening. Then starting breaking about once a minute. My bobbin ran out and after that the skipping starting immediately. I put in a new size 20 needle, rethreaded, quilt isn't tight. Any suggestions? |

A few things to check are the following:
Make sure the needle is in straight. Make sure you put the bobbin back in the bobbin case going the right direction (when you hold the bobbin case with the opening for the bobbin facing you, when pulling the thread, the bobbin should be turning clockwise) Make sure the outside spring or arm on your bobbin case does not have any lint built up under it. If you take a straight pin and slide it under that spring, it will take out any lint under it. Double check to make sure the tension on your bobbin is still good. Check with a full bobbin. Pull out about 6 inches of thread and holding that thread, you should be able to have the bobbin case lift off your hand and then slide down like a spider on a spider web. Not too fast, but it should slowly slide down. Double check your threading to make sure you have not gotten the thread hung up around anything and that it is flossed good into the tension knob disks. Check one thing at a time. If you do all at once or more than one thing at once and the problem gets solved, you won't know which thing solved it. Let me know if any of these helped. Hi Kathi, I have learned that fat thread is certainly an issue! I just couldn't finish the quilt and I have about 18" left. I took it off the frame and tried to finish it on my Bernina and I had exactly the same problems. I love the look of the heavy threads but I obviously don't have the skill level to make it work. Of well.
Thanks for you advice - it is so appreciated! |
