I am quilting on an HQ stich regulated machine at 40% speed on a pro frame. I am using Sew Fine thread in upper and bobbin. After 3-4 inches of quilting (all linear using channel lock), I get lots of loops on the bottom and the top thread shreds. I have used a tension gauge to set the bobbin tension and matched the top tension to that. I have tried lowering both the top and the bobbin tension to minimize a tendency to break or shred. I took my machine in for servicing to see if there were a burr or a machine malfunction. The dealer reports that the machine is functioning well and is without burrs. I have repositioned the needled at 7:00 and 5:00. I switched to a #40 polyester and experienced the same problem. I am using a #16 needle but have tried an 18 without effect. The fabric is tightly woven Kona muslin on top and bottom and the batting is wool. Help, help, help!!!! This is driving me batty and making me want to purchase a different brand machine. Please give me an answer so that I can finish this quilt.
I am sorry to hear that you are having problems with your tension. If you know that your bottom tension is set correctly and you are getting loops on the bottom, your top tension needs to be tightened. The other thing that could be happening to cause the thread to shed is that you are quilting from right to left. If you are quilting from left to right and have set your tension correctly and are still having problems please call our technical solutions at 1-877-697-8458, M-F 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. They will be able to help you.

Does this mean that I may only quilt from left to right? When doing channel quilting, one has to return from the right to the left. What would you suggest?
When you are finished with one row end on the right and tie off. Then move your machine back to the left and down as far as you need then begin stitching again. This will help prevent your thread from shreading. You can try rotating your needle but if that doesn't help, ending and starting on the left is the best solution.
