Top thread pulling out of tension disc

| I have a HQ fusion. I am using a rayon thread (somewhat shiny) and the top thread keeps popping right out of the tension disc as I stitch. This also happens if I merely pull on the thread from down by the needle. What is the problem and what can I do to keep this from happening? |

It sounds like your thread is not being flossed between your tension disks. When you are threading your machine make sure you are flossing your thread into your tension disks by pulling your thread up between the disks, like flossing your teeth. After it is flossed between the disks you will need to adjust your tension.

I have also had this problem from time to time. Two things that seem to have helped me:
1. Even though cone threads are supposedly wound so that they feed properly off the end of the cone, I find that many work better if they are unwound off the cone, just like spool threads. This has been even more noticeable when using the bobbin winder, due to its higher speed. If the thread feeds off the top of the cone, it seems to form "twisty knots" that make the thread jump out of the tension disks. When feeding off the side of the cone, everything goes smoothly. 2. After making a pencil mark for resetting reference, I moved the thread guide located just above the machine tension disks slightly to the left. This didn't seem to adversely affect sewing tension issues and fixed the problem that I was having at the moment with a specific thread. As I remember, this was Superior NiteLite. |

Another thing that can cause the thread to pop out of the tension discs if you know for sure that you have flossed the thread in, is that you might have adjusted the tension knob too tight and the discs are too tight together. This can cause the thread to pop out of the tension discs. How tight have you turned the tension knob? Kathi Salter Handi Quilter Studio Educator |

| Thanks for the reply Kathy. You are absolutely right, and I did have the tension too tight! |
