Excited with my new machine and will go for my 3 hour training in about 2 weeks. Have been playing/practicing on my own and feel comfortable with most items. What kind of questions - topics should I be asking when I go? Anything one may not think to ask till used for a while?
I'm going for my 3 hour training in about 2 weeks also. I've quilted two crib quilts and basted a queen for hand quilting. I've been freemotion quilting for several years on my sewing machine and seem to be using this machine well (just need practice), so I would very much appreciate any questions one should ask in class also.
I would ask how to adjust tensions in bobbin and needle, how to do ruler work, how to know when your machine needs to be taken in for maintenance, how to properly perform regular maintenance at home, how to square the quilt top and the quilt backing and why this is important. If I think of more I'll repost.
Thank you so much crashnquilt, these are most helpful.
Great questions. I learn so much from others on a couple chat sites. Appreciate people like you willing to help us out. Thanks.
I need HELP. My husband who thinks that $6000 to $8000 for a "sewing machine" rather than a fishing boat is too extravagant, but he supports my crafts in every other way. He has been hearing me talk about a "Handi quilter machine and frame" and came in from the flea market recently with a box containing what appears to be an older handiquilter frame. It is an authentic Handiquilter with their label on a couple of pieces. I would love to put it together and use it to see if I really do want to invest in the HQ16. He's right, $6000 to $8000 is a lot of money to pay for something that you may decide is not your "thing". Anyway, there are no instructions for assembly or use. Where can I find help in putting this together and basic instructions on making it work with my sewing machine?
Waited to see if anyone would respond so I'll just tell you what I did. I bought the HQ frame I think called HQII and a Brother 1500. Cost about $1500 to see if I would like it had it a year and added PCQuilter and Max Throat so I'd have 15" of stitching room.. Just this last September bought a HQ16 and love it will be upgrading to the PCQ Side Mount in January. Have my order in already. You should be able to get some info on the Yahoo group site for Handiquilter. Would depend if you have the Hocky stick sides for the poles or the clear plastic. I think I still have my original HQ VHS let me know which sides you have and I'll look for the video. I love my setup from the beginning to all the upgrades. Not sorry I did any of it.

Grandmajuki,
How do you like your PCQ? I was really interested in getting one. And does it work well with the HQ16? Thank you.
Grandmajuki, The sides that hold the poles are the white hockey stick type side. If you will just loan me the video I will be ever so greatful. I will watch it and then return it. I will gladly pay for the shipping both ways. Thanks. let me know if you find it. In the meantime, I have watched all the videos offered on this website but will try to find something on the web.
Hi maggie here i don't know if this a training question but i would like to know if anyone has ever quilted with cotton material that looks like suede material a lady want's me to quilt a quilt for her and i am a newbie i have only done one quilt and that was a all cotton i i just did a over all that's all please help thanks
I don't see why you can't quilt the suede like fabric but remember that any holes put in the fabric probably won't close up as well as cotton. It also won't scrunch up like cotton when it's washed. See if she has scraps to practice on. Don't forget to wash it, too. Seems like a big undertaking for a second quilt.
I have to apologize for not responding sooner. Not sure how I lost this topic... anyway email me and I'll send the VHS.. Also I have sent my PCquilter off to upgrade to the Side Mount so I don't have to move the HQ16 back and forth. Can't wait to get back and as soon as I do will let you know about how I like it.I"ve had PCQuilter for over 2 years and really do like the results. I miss it now. But working on quilt tops to quilt when it gets here.
