Hi all. I've been reading this forum for months now to learn as much as I can. I''ve got my first real quilt on my machine and I've come to the end, but need to turn the quilt to do the side borders. Is that how everyone does their borders? The questiion is...how do I load the quilt on the leaders? I would guess that I only use 2 rollers? Which ones? Kathy |

| Hi, Kathy! I'm fairly new to all this, but I have been turning my quilts, so I'll tell you how I do it. Of course, turn the quilt, and pin the top edge to your take up leader. Roll it up, then pin the bottom edge to the leader that originally had your quilt back pinned to it. WORD OF WARNING: before you turn the quilt, make sure you baste the heck out of the sides. The first time I turned a quilt, even though I basted the very edges of it, I had this huge, horrible wrinkle in the back when I finished. Now I take water soluble thread and baste all over the sides. It only takes a minute or two to change the thread and baste before I roll the quilt after each pass, and the results are perfect. Other, more experienced folks can probably tell you other ways to prevent the wrinkles, but this way is easy for a newbie like me. |

| I just learned how to bast a quilt on the HG 16 for a quilt that will be hand quilted. Sure wish that had been covered in the original lessons |

| Jan, I've been wondering how to baste for handquilters, I've even had people ask for this service, but I couldn't make it work. How did you do it? |

| Hi everyone. I, too, am about to put my first real quilt on my machine. I had not thought of turning the quilt to do the borders. I plan to meander and thought I would change my thread as I went...do the top and side border then the quilt center (top), then roll and continue. Are there any pros/cons to just quilting as I go? |

How excited you must be....your first quilt on your HQ! Enjoy quilting! To answer your question....I have yet to turn a quilt. I enjoy free-motion quilting and have just done different things in the borders if I wanted. My suggestion would be that after you load your quilt (You've basted your pieces to your backing with a basting or large stitch across the top of the quilt), make sure you run a basting stitch down both sides of your quilt. Then quilt away!! After you've advanced and rolled your quilt for your next pass, just be sure to baste down the sides again. (I measure from the center, keep a note of that measurement and make sure that each time I advance the quilt, I check to make sure the side measurements from the center of the quilt top are the same. That helps to keep the quilt "square".) |

Cindi, I am new at this and still learning, so my question to you is what do you do about 'squaring" the quilt if your measurements are not the same from center to side after each pass? Thanks |
