Upgrading the handle bars and software

I just recently purchased my HQ 16 and am wondering for those of you that have upgraded, how you feel about the upgrades. I am still making payments on my machine and didn't get the upgrade info. in time to get the discounted price. I am looking at $749.00 plus shipping to get the new handle bars and software upgrades. I'm wondering how you quilters feel about the upgrades so far. I haven't used my machine enough so far to justify spending that much money already, but am not sure of all the conveniences it would offer. I would love to hear your input. THANKS!

I managed to get my upgrade at the sale price. The package arrived Friday night and I read and re-read the installation instructions. The I watched the DVD that came with it - Twice! and then I felt confident enough to do the installation which was really very simple. One catch, make sure the cable that goes to the new tilt screen is not clamped hard between the top of the machine and the handlebar - I had to move my 'modification' plate to the very front holes in the top of the machine ( I didn't see this until the next morning - It is best to do this in day light, haha) Other than that I had no problems. I love not having to re-set the machine everytime Iturn it off - which is with every bobbin change - with every 'rest period' and sometimes when I roll to a new position. And the lights are good too. I did whole quilt on Sunday! and I was quite satisfied! |

Does anyone know how often Handiquilter releases software upgrades? Is the pod replaced every time? I have had my machine for three years and this is the first upgrade since I bought it. I realize that most of the cost is because they replace the pod but it is a little steep for me. I called to discuss what I would get for the money but I wasn't really happy with the phone discussion. I would never consider replacing the front handles just for the tilt screen and cannot make up my mind about just the software upgrade. I am doing fine they way things are. |

The upgrade came out about 2 weeks after I bought my machine. I figure that for that kind of money, I can put up with entering my preferences when I start the machine. As for additional lighting, I went to Bed,Bath and Beyond and found a clip on light and daylight bulbs. That works great, and I can turn on the light without having to turn on the machine.

I received my upgrade software pod lastnight and replaced my old one without any trouble. But... I really would like a manual for the new features to be sure I understand how and when to use them. I did not get the new handlebars, because I do not need that tilt screen yet. Thanks

I installed my new software and handles last night and let me tell you they are GREAT! I can't believe how much better the handles feel. I just played last night I'm going to quilt tonight and on a black quilt, I'll let you know how the lights work out. But I do see that you can purchase more lights to go in the handles. I have a clip on light and it gets in my way, I'd rather have it all in the handles.

I just had my pod upgraded and turned it on. I'm not sure what the 1/2 stitch is for since I always use needle down mode. I am wondering where the "bobbin is running low" item is. Does anyone know what's up with that?

I was told there is no " Bobbin running low" yet. Did anyone get any better info??? I wish there was a better manual with this machine so I could read and learn more about the settings. Its hard to figure it out on my own. :)

I agree. It isn't an inexpensive machine. There should be a decent manual to go with it. Now that we are able to get up grades, I'm surprised that there isn't more information with them. From what I'm learning from this forum, you buy the up grades and then you are on your own. Sure hope that when I decide to go that way, my dealer can help me out and not leave me in the dark.

To be very honest, I think my dealer is more in the dark than I am. At least I have all of you to learn and share with., :) and together I'm sure in time we will figure it all out. A good manual would be helpful tho too.

HandiQuilter sure knows how to produce a nice machine - you'd think they could produce a decent manual.

I feel for those of you with "dim" dealers. Mine is great--in San Bernardino, CA. Another place I shopped was in the "not too helpful" category. I agree--a good manual would be nice. Has anyone suggested it to them?
