using the ruler base

I have only had my HQ16 and pro stitcher for a month and I love them both. I just added the new micro handles and a ruler base. I can't seem to learn to use the ruler very well and don't know if the new handles are in the way or if I just have not mastered it. I have not seen the ruler demonstrated. Anyone have experience with this that can help me learn???
