Hi everyone,

I've got one for you. I've been using my HQ16 for over a year and never had this happen before. I'm quilting a quilt for a friend. She has used 40 different fabrics - all the same block with a different fabric in each block. The machine will not quilt the first block. I did the other 3 in the row without a problem. This first block which might be a batik in a dark teal. My stitches are about 1 inch long. I thought it was because there are a lot of seams but it sewed the other blocks without any problem. I've left a message for HandiQuilter - hoping one of the teachers will have a solution. I don't think I could just do a meander in the block either. If I don't hear from them today, I think I'll loosen the bobbin for just this one block and see what happens. I'm getting tired of taking out stitches. Help somebody!!!!
Did you ever get a solution to your problem? I am quite interested in seeing what the problem is. I talked to a couple other gals that longarm and they have never had that problem.

I just experienced that problem myself a week or so ago, it was not a batik, it was a cream on cream and I never could find out why. I ended up changing needles and using a larger needle to get through it. Still does not make sense to me so I will be happy to know what the answer is too.
Hi,

I haven't talked to the piecer yet but I think she used some hand-dyed fabric that she dyed herself. I ended up loosening the top and bottom tensions. There were a couple of spots that I re-did on my small machine. Since it was the first block in the quilt I could manage it and thankfully none of the rest caused any trouble (75 x 95). Handiquilter said that they were stumped also but would have suggested using a larger needle. If I hadn't unstitched that stupid block so many times, I would have gone to a larger needle but I didn't want to leave bigger holes besides the small holes. I'm so glad that I finished that quilt - it wasn't fun - a lot of seams with half inch pieces of finished strips. Wish I knew how to send a picture - it looks great. I had trouble with a cream on cream too. I could hear the needle go in every time and continued after changing to a new needle. I guess I'll consider this as a learning experience.
just wondering if the cream on cream fabrics y'all had trouble with were the kind with the design painted on?

Mine was the painted on kind.
the fabric felt like it was kind of rubbery where the design was. I also work at a fabric shop and we don't see this often. But then we can't tell the customers what they can quilt with. lol
Hi,
I talked to the piecer about her fabric and she said that it was hand dyed that she purchased from a quilt shop and thankfully only purchased half of a yard because it was so expensive. It really didn't feel much different than the other fabrics but sure was a stinker to quilt.
I wished I read this earlier. Last week I had a problem with a baby quilt. It was also hand dyed fabric. I changed needle. changed threads 3 times, adjusted tension. Took threads out 3 times. But I finally got it done. I almost threw in it in the trash, but it wasn't mine so I couldn't.
Did anyone try using silicone on the thread and/or needle? I'm just starting my HQ experience but used silicone when I tried machine quilting through that type fabric. Our HQ's are definately different from a sewing machine.
When I experienced the problem with that one particular block, I did put silicone on my thread - I usually don't need it - but it didn't help. It did turn out that particular piece of fabric was hand dyed and very coarse. The larger need probably would have helped. I hope I never experience that situation again.
I've had this problem a few times when the fabric has metalic in it.
