What are some techniques in using this for doing crosshatching or straight or diagonal free motion stitching on blocks?

This ruler is good for stitch in the ditch, stitching straight lines and guiding your needle around curves or stop it from sewing too far.

If you are doing a 45 degree cross hatch, the angle lines on the ruler will keep you on track.
