Groovey Boards

It amazes me that the boards do not come with any directions. I would like to know:
1. The best way to line up subsequent rows. 2. How do I know which way to lay the boards down? The boards are not marked in anyway. 3. Anyone know where I can get printed directions for using the boards? |

| Put this question in the Ask an Expert discussion and you'll get an answer from Handi Quilter. |

You line up the boards just like doing a pantograph. There is a DVD on the HQ site by Suzanne Hyland. She tells you exactly how to line up a panto.
You place the boards the same way you want the design to stitch out. |

| I already have some groovy boards and the stylus from Handi Quilter, and I was wondering if this stylus will work with the boards from RNS Design? Does anyone know, and/or have you used the boards from RNS Design? Thanks. |

Not too sure about the stylus, but the wife of RNS also owns the HQ16. I do know if you email them or call them they will respond real quick. I'm pretty sure the stylus would work.
Regarding the actual boards, I don't have them but belong to another forum that a lot of the longarmers have their boards and absolutely love them! |

| I have a couple of HQ groovy boards & RNS boards. I actually bought the RNS stylus to work with both. The HQ stylus wears down the tip very quickly & they cost $10 each to replace. The RNS one is made from stainless steel |

| Hope this advice about lining up your groovy boards isn't too late. If this is concerning the row after you roll your quilt after doing the first go round, I found that if I use a clear plastic grid (saw one that should do at JoAnn's, liked the one from Bayside Quilting called a Pattern Grid, but for this the one at JoAnn's is more managable) and trace the pattern 1 1/2 times (this puts the first row on the grid twice, top and bottom, bottom one being the "new beginning") with wet erase. You only need to trace the first repeat of the design as this is repeated across the whole quilt from side to side. Go to the front of the quilt and locate the bottom row of just stitched design on your quilt top, line the design on the grid up with the bottom row of your just stitched design (because you have had to roll the quilt, you'll have to push the plastic grid under the bottom back rail to do this) which leaves you with the beginning of the new row. Position the needle over the top corner of the new beginning. This helped me be sure the needle would be in the right place for the next round of quilting. Remove the grid, lower the needle into the quilt, guide the machine backward as you roll the quilt, until the stylus reaches the point of the first stich on the groovy board. I use the lazer light to help pinpoin the area so I don't have to run to the back. I always position this earlier on the rear of the machine near where I take my first stitch. This helps me to know when my stylus was in the right position to start the new rows. I also pushed the grid across the quilt while it was still under the pole, using the same approach with the needle and lazer lignt, checking out bottom stitches here and there so I could make sure the quilt was straight. It's not complicated and saves me headaches later (like when my row is crooked and I have to pick it out). |
