Machine fault

I am having problems with a machine fault. I took off the medal tooth (don't know how else to describe it) that is under the medal plate that holds the inner bobbin in place. When I do that the bobbin moves without a problem. When I replace the medal tooth then the bobbin will not move. I have somehow caused a problem and don't know what to do to fix it. My nearest machine repair facility is over 100 miles from where I live. I do not have a technical manual only a user's manual and it does not show how the bobbin works. Does anyone have a solution for this? I would appreciate any advise.
