| I guess that I am taking a poll of sorts as to what thread the many HQ users on this forum for machine quilting by C & C today and it did very well and I had no problems. Then suddenly it started shredding and breaking. Any ideas? |

I use Maxi-Loc and Signature the most. They are thin serger thread but very strong and leave little to no lint. The thread build up from backtracking and crossing over don't build up so quickly.
I've also use King Tut, Rainbows, Lava and just about everything in the Superior line. I realize most people call them expensive, but if I'm not breaking thread and having to restart all the time I feel like I'm saving thread. I have used C&C Star thread with decent results but did have problems with frequent breakage. As to why, I really don't know. But with the threads I've written I get minimal to no breakage and good stitch definition. Hope this helps and keep us posted on your progress! |

i've used a variety of different threads - YLI, superior perfect quilter, valdani, plain old gutermann and c&c from joann, sulky metallics, i just tried my first threadart cotton - and haven't had problems. in the bobbin, i've used bottom line and have been switching over to sew fine. no performance problems with bottom line, i just prefer sew fine for those occassions when i have to "unsew." i've done bobbin work with perle cotton and YLI candlelight.
the only threads i've had any problems with are the same ones that give me problems on all my other machines - sulky blendables and threadart rayon. from what i've read, i don't think that i'm alone in having problems with them. the sulky blendables do better with straight stitching, but i do free motion almost exclusively, so i don't bother with it anymore. but that's not specific to handiquilter. i expected to run into problems with certain threads because i don't have as many needle options with my HQ - no big eyes out there among the round topped needles - and have been pleasantly surprised that i haven't had to change the threads i'm used to using even a little bit. every once in a great while i've come across a bad spool, although that's highly unusual. if you're having breakage problems, don't forget to try changing your needle. i know that that's basic, but it's easy to forget in the midst of frustration. maureen |

I've not had any trouble with any of the threads I use. I like to quilt with Mettler 50 wt cotton, YLI 40 wt cotton, Valdani hand dyes, Isacord embroidery thread, Sulky blendables, they all seem to work beautifully. I mostly use the Bottom Line in my bobbin.

I have purchased some King Tut but I did have breakage problems with it as I did with the C & C Star thread, but after I had my training that my dealer provided, I realized how to fix my tension AND that my quilt was too tight. Once I fixed those two things, I have not had as many breakage problems, but when I do, it is usually because I have tightened my quilt too much. I loosen it and all is well. Now I know that it probably won't matter which thread I choose if can remember to keep quilt and machine at correct tension.
Thanks for all input. |

| I just finished quilting a quilt with Mettler cotton thread. I usually use Signature or King Tut, but the Mettler was the perfect color. It was red thread and when I was finished there was a red line on my machine just above the last thread guide. I had to really rub to get it off the machine. I'm almost afraid to wash the quilt for fear the thread will run. It also seemed to give off a lot of fuzz for thread. Anyone have this problem? |
