When I quilt using a cone of thread, I am able to get the tension just right as long as I don't fill the bobbins to the absolute brim and don't turn too fast on my quilting designs. I'm thrilled to pieces.

But when I quilt using a spool (Superior Rainbows tri-lobal rayon in the top and Bottom line in the bobbin -- same as what I used for most of this project -- I'm down to just quilting the borders now and have changed thread colors) I have a TERRIBLE problem with bobbin backlash and the bobbin thread breaks after about 12 inches of stitching. Over and over and over again. I thought it was because I overfilled the bobbin, but I've had to pull off so much thread now that I have significantly less than half a bobbin of thread now, and it's still happening. Perhaps not to the same magnitude, but I still have breakage. It's frustrating. I do not want to purchase a cone of this thread -- I'm using up what I have, and don't anticipate needing a full cone of this color anytime in the near future.

Changing the tension of the top doesn't fix this problem. Do I need to tighten the bobbin tension? I guess I'll try that next and see what works, but it's quite annoying to have SUCH a difference between using the cones and using the spools in the tension requirements.

I'm flummoxed. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Do you still have problems if you put the spool on the horizontal bar attachment (because if you put it where you put a cone, it twists as it comes off)? That usually helps me.

Good luck!
