Practice, practice, practice. Don't mean to be flip but that was my experience. I took a class in free motion with my home sewing machine. Before that I had tried it on my own and was always frustrated. Something about being in a class with other people who were having the same problems I was gave me some confidence. I have quilted several items on my Bernina and just yesterday bought an HQ sixteen sitdown. I got it set up today and practiced on it this evening. I was delighted with how easy it was to use. I think it's been 2 years since I took the class and I do now feel confident about my free motion quilting.

Another word (words?). Don't fret about stippling. It's vastly overused. Try other designs and you may be a lot happier with your results.
