How does everyone find the table for the HQ 16, Is it sturdy or would you have a custom table built for the machine?

Your input would help me a lot.

Thanks
I love it. I like that you can adjust the height and I like stitching from the end. There are some who have said they prefer sitting at the machine the way you would with a traditional domestic sewing machine and they have purchased or made plexiglas extension tables like the ones used with domestic machines. I prefer the handiquilter sit down table. I made a "fence" on three sides so the quilt does not fall off the edge. It is about 4 inches high and in the front I added quarter round flush with the table so that the quilt would glide smoothly over the front edge if it is in my lap. I also taped my "slider" over the machine bed so that everything is smooth. I have had no trouble and really enjoy quilting in this manner. I have not quilted bed size quilts as most of my quilts are art quilts. I have only quilted child size and smaller but I do not think a larger quilt would be a problem.
I recently quilted my first full size quilt on my sitdown system. It works but I did have problems when the large quilt hung on the corners of the table. Probably should have anticipated this. Now I am going to practice on several small projects so that I can develop my steady pace. Also, for the next full size quilt, I am going to either use another table next to the Handiquilt table or else do what Quiltinggeek has done and build a wall around the edge of my table. I do love this system. Have done an art quilt on it with no hang ups at all.
I haven't checked the HQ forum for some time but noticed the posts from last year plus the recent post recalling how large quilt edges getting caught as it drops off the edge of the table.

I really love my hq sitdown machine and table. But I do like to quilt large quilts and wanted a solution to the quilt falling off the table. This last Christmas I called a carpenter and had him build and attach some "extensions" to the edge of the table. The table width is 36 inches and the extensions bring the entire with of the table to right at 50 inches. Plus, I did have him build a railing about 5 inches high around the edge of the extensions to hold the quilt within the confines of the table. Overall, I am very happy with this solution. I wish I would have completely sketched out how I wanted it to look because he didn't wrap around the railing at the back of the table quite as far as I would have liked but hopefully this will help anyone else who may be thinking about altering the table to quilt large quilts.

I just set up a "glog" here at the HQ site, so I will try to post a picture of it there. Wish me luck!
I am new. I like your extension ideas...I have used an extra table to the right but never thought about side boards. My trouble area is in the front and I was thinking of some plastic corner cover. Any ideas?

I just got my HQ sit down yesterday and got it set up today. I think the table is very sturdy and substantial. It weighs a ton! The only reason you may want to have one custom made is if you intend to work on large quilts. I'm just going to set up card tables, etc.,around the HQ table for support when I do a larger quilt.
