problems with thread coming off of spool while quilting

Last Oct. I purchased some Marathon brand thread after the educators working in the HQ booth said it was OK thread. I was using the metallic ieradescent (I can't spell today sorry) thread and the tension was good, no thread breaking, bobbin thread was Bottom Line and it was good. The quilting was going along great except this problem: The thread would unwind off the large cone and get tangled. I had to stop after quilting for a short time to untangle the thread. If I didn't get it untangled it would create a mess on the tall thread guide and of course that meant the thread would not allow for quilting -- then the thread broke. *needle size was a 19.
What are the tricks to using this thread? The show is coming up soon in Des Moines and I plan on stopping by the both but I thought maybe if I posted this somebody could give me the tips. I am thinking of adding some sort of guide that the thread can't pop out of because if keep popping out of the tall guide on top of the machine. Sometimes as the thread unwound it unwound too much and tangled coming off the cone. I never have had this issue before. It reminded me of issues using the monofilament thread when I would quilt on my regular machine but I would use the stand alone thread guide that is tall and that solved the problem. I can't use that on my HQ. Ideas I have thought of but need to try: placing cone unside down on thread stand?--this would give me a wide top instead of the small top of cone adding a guide that has no chance of the thread popping out? maybe adding a small washer on top of thread cone and pull thread through it so that the washer adds a bit of weight so the thread doesn't unwind so easily? Any thoughts? I know when I stitched on the HQ on display it had Marathon metallic gold and that machine didn't have this problem. I really don't think it is the machine but the thread coming off the cone. The cone is about 5 to 6 " tall. Thank you, Kathy |

| I went into my Bernina Dealer today and talked to her, and she told me I have a thread net and try that. I just logged on and that is the same answer. Easy, I do have a thread net and just put it on the tall spool and pulled on the thread -- I do believe it will work. My dealer said something about thread twist and that when it comes off the spool it twists even more. Thank you! Kathy |
