Practice Free-Motion Doodling

Practice does make perfect — especially when it comes to free-motion machine quilting, either on a sit-down machine, a stand-up longarm, or a domestic sewing machine.

The HQ educators always emphasize the importance of “doodling” quilting designs to build muscle memory. So get out a notepad and pencil and start doodling. Practice drawing feathers, meandering designs, loops, swirls, and invent some of your own all-over continuous line quilting designs.

Or if you have an iPad, how about using a sketching / drawing app.

These are three free sketching apps I’ve tried (download them from the App Store in iTunes):

  • Paper (by FiftyThree)
  • Skitch (by Evernote)
  • SketchBook Express (by Autodesk).

Use your finger — or consider picking up a capacitive stylus (a couple dollars) and use it instead of your finger on your iPad screen.

Are you a free-motion doodler?

PicsArt for Android. You can take a picture of your quilt block and then doodle on it in PicsArt. 8-)

Thanks for the great info Jeannie. To try out quilting designs on the pic of the quilt block is even better than just doodling. Now I’ve got to look for a similar app for the iPad.

I don’t know but I would assume there are. I simply searched for “sketching” and “drawing” apps. Good luck.

Do you know of any similar apps for Android Tablets?
