We are so pleased to have Helen Godden, award-winning free-motion art quilter from Australia as one of our teachers at the 2014 Handi Quilter’s Academy. She will also be our keynote speaker for our banquet on Friday night.
In only 10 years of quilting, Helen has won 11 awards at Houston International Quilt Festival, including the inaugural A World of Beauty and Master of Innovative Artistry. Helen has also won international awards in Japan and UK for her unique approach to machine quilting and is a four-time winner of Best of State in Australia.

Helen is a very popular teacher and uses humor a relaxed style to encourage all students. In her work, Helen is focused on color, design, and the story the piece tells, and uses her drawing and free-motion skills to quilt award-winning works of art. Helen’s work is predominately pictorial, with strong design and exciting play with color. Helen literally draws with her quilting machine.
Helen also incorporates humor into her work and often has an Aussie touch. Combining her teaching degree and her art experience, Helen teaches from a slightly different angle and enjoys helping even the most traditional of machine sewers to find new direction in free-motion machine quilting and opening up new avenues for their creative potential.
Helen won awards for quilts at this year’s International Quilt Festival — each quilted on her HQ Sweet Sixteen.
Cutting Down the Tall Poppies, winner Festival Gallery of Art Quilts (2013)
Zen Magpies, honorable mention 2013 A World of Beauty
Helen will be teaching two classes at Handi Quilter’s Academy, each taught twice — once as a hands-on class and once as a lecture demo.
Her first class is Rev Up the HQ Sweet Sixteen with an Aussie.
Here’s how Helen describes this class: In this class you’ll quilt at full throttle and hit maximum overdrive as you put the Grand Prix of quilting machines through its paces. No time for a pit stop in this 2-hour advanced class as you learn new quilting styles from the maverick of free-motion machine quilting from Down Under. This class will be a full tank of fun and learning, and laughter is guaranteed.
Helen’s other class is based on her popular Liberation from the Ditch video. Watch how she describes her Liberation from the Ditch approach to free-motion quilting.
Don’t miss this opportunity to learn from one of the best!
