Introduction to the HQ Sweet Sixteen If you are frustrated qullting on a sewing machine, or have problems getting even stitches – this class is for you! (Sit Down Quilting Machine Rentals: No class required! Contact us for details!) We supply all of the material for the morning portion of the workshop: practice quilts, backing fabric, batting, thread, binding, etc. Each student will learn to square, load and quilt on a practice quilt using our 3 Longarm Quilting Machines. We will teach you how to properly prepare a quilt to zip and load on the longarm using the Quick Zip System. You will learn how to handle a quilt that does not lay flat or square and get it under control using different types of batting and loading techniques. We will show you our easy tricks for squaring the quilt while basting, lining up a pantograph pattern and how to quickly finish a quilt by simply following the line of the pattern with the laser light from the back of the machine. Anyone can do it! We have renters from 8 to 80’s! After we have completed quilting the practice quilt, we will demonstrate adding binding, mitering corners and finishing the ends all with the longarm! We unzip the practice quilts, trim them and hand them off to our volunteers to hand sew the binding around the back so we can dontate them to a local charity. In the afternoon of the Beginning Longarm Quilting Workshop for Renters, we will prepare each student’s quilt for their rental day. You will learn to square the backing fabric and attach your Quick Zip System Rental Set, so you will be ready to zip and load when you arrive on your rental day. We will also help you pick out thread, batting and a pattern to compliment your piecing. GETTING TO KNOW YOUR HANDI QUILTER—Spend a day getting to know your Handi Quilter quilting machine. We will cover: cleaning, maintaining, threading, tensioning, loading, floating, basting and spend a little time having fun with some basic edge to edge freehand continuous line designs. This class is suitable for new owners or anyone who needs a good refresher class. Fee: $100. Tues. June 11 9:30-5:00 pm All Levels BASIC RULERS— Discussion and demonstration on how to use the wide variety of HQ Rulers and Templates. Proper use of the HQ Ruler Base, ruler safety and creative ruler work designs will be taught. All levels, Fee: $50 All skill levels. Wed. June 12 9:30-12:30 pm PANTOGRAPHS, BLOCKS and GROOVY BOARDS—Spend an afternoon learning how to set up and use your machine with groovy boards and various types of paper pantos and block patterns. We will also discuss and demo using pantos with ProStitcher. Fee: $50. Wed. June 12 2:00-5:00 pm All levels. ART & STITCH: BASICS and BEYOND—Basic overview of the Art & Stitch program and features. We will cover basic digitizing and leveraging digitized designs into blocks, pantos, and whole quilt layouts. We will be working in teams and doing lots of hands on. Combine this class with the ProStitcher Wholecloth class and jump start your custom quilting projects. Laptop required with latest Art and Stitch loaded and activated. Fee: $100. Thurs. June 13 9:30-5:00 pm PRO STITCHER WHOLE CLOTH TECNIQUES—Learn to use the newest version ProStitcher to make whole cloth quilts. We will use designs from the ProStitcher catalog to create a whole cloth wall-hanging size quilt sample. This is a great class to review many important ProStitcher features like dropping and resizing designs in blocks and triangles, using MOVE, properly setting up and quilting borders and corners, using New Start and End Points to quilt designs bigger than your throat space. Art & Stitch: Basics and Beyond recommended but not required. Fee: $100. Fri. June 14 9:30-5:00 pm THREAD PAINTING and BEYOND—Time for some serious fun. Learn to use thread to add dimension and interest to fabric appliqué and to create your own unique thread appliqués. Thread painting and ways to use thread to create textures will also be practiced. Supply kits of eight different Superior Threads samples will be provided for $35. You will go home with a sample of all the techniques. Bring marking chalk pencil or pens, a fine point Sharpie and your own additional thread if desired. Fee: $100. Sat. The 2013 Upper Midwest Quilt Show will be held at the Olympia Resort and Convention Center in Oconomowoc, WI. Classes start July 29th, 2013 with International, National, and Local Teachers offering great classes in all areas of Machine Quilting, longarm and sit down! Quilt Show and Vendor Mall Hours: Opens with Preview and Teacher Quilt Off on Wednesday, July 31st, 3 - 6PM, Thursday-Friday 10AM-5PM and Saturday 10AM-3PM. The Quilting Connection, LLC from Elkhorn, WI and New London, WI will be demonstrating the HQ18 Avante, HQ24 Fusion, HQ Pro Stitcher with the Windows 8 tablet and the Art and Stitch Digitizing Program, and the HQ Sweet 16 Sit Down machine. They will also have a variety of quilting supplies and accessories available in their booth. The Quilting Connenction, LLC will be donating 8 Handi Quilter Machines for the classrooms, which will be available for special pre-show purchase prices. Sue Schmieden will also be teaching Load It, Square It, Quilt It! on Friday morning. This is a great class for newbies or anyone interested in purchasing a machine. Stop by their booth to say hi, test drive a machine of your dreams and enjoy the great classes and night events at the Upper Midwest Quilt Show! Quilt Happy! Sue Schmieden and Angie Lois
