Handi Quilter's Academy Frequently Asked Questions
My spouse (or friend) is coming with me, but he or she isn't going to attend the training. How should I register? Can he or she eat meals with me?
Register as "Single Occupancy with a Guest" ($1149) and indicate whether you want a king-sized bed or two queen-sized beds. Your companion may join us for the Wednesday evening reception/dinner and the Park City barbeque for a companion fee of $150. If he or she wants to join us for the three breakfasts, three lunches, and the two evening meal events (Wednesday reception and Thursday barbeque in Park City), a companion meal ticket is $300.
My quilting buddy and I want to share a room when we attend the Handi Quilter's Academy. How do we register?
The easiest way is for one of you to register for both as "Double Occupancy" ($999 per person). We will need names and contact information for both of you. Will will contact you for your payment information and you can clarify your situation at that time. We can charge your credit cards separately if needed.
What is there to do in Midway, Utah and at the Homestead Resort?
This is a popular resort town and the hotel has many amenities. More information is available here. Unfortunately it's unlikely that the ski resorts will still be operating, although if there's no snow on the ground, the Homestead's golf course will be open. See our Dining page for information about restaurants in Midway, Utah.
I want to extend my stay at the Homestead Resort to take advantage of some of the local amenities. Can I do this?
Certainly. The Homestead Resort has offered our participants a nightly rate of $89/night + taxes ($100.21) per room for the nights of Tuesday, April 16, 2013 and Saturday, April 20, 2013. Just let us know when you register which nights you want to add to your stay.
Are there any quilt shops in the area?
There is a quilt shop called Seasons of Home in Midway, Utah, the same town where the Homestead Resort is located. You will have time to visit it on Friday evening if you choose.
We are also offering a post-conference quilt shop hop on Saturday afternoon. We will visit four Salt Lake City quilt shops (three of them have been featured in Quilt Sampler magazine) -- Elaine's Quilt Block, Quilts Etc., Material Girls, and end with Pine Needles located at the historic Gardner Village. You will have approximately 50 minutes at each of the first three shops and two hours to shop at Pine Needles and the rest of historic Gardner Village. We'll end our evening with dinner and arrive back at the Homestead before 10:00 PM.
I do not have a longarm quilting machine. Does it make sense for me to attend Handi Quilter's Academy?
Definitely. We have designed our HQ Pro-Stitcher training so that even a beginner will benefit from the classes. You will gain several hours experience using the HQ18 Avanté machine in our hands-on lab. What's more, you do not need to be an experienced longarm quilter to take advantage of the computerized quilting capabilities of the HQ Pro-Stitcher.
What is the cancellation policy if I have to cancel?
If you cancel before February 18, 2013, you will receive a 100% refund. Because of commitments to the Homestead Resort, there is no refund after February 18. Similarly there are no refunds for no-shows.
It looks like the Homestead Resort is about an hour from the Salt Lake City Airport. What's the best way for me to get to the Homestead?
We have arranged for transportation from the airport to the Homestead for the afternoon of Wednesday, April 17, at noon, 1:30, 3:00 and 4:30. If you cannot arrange your travel to take advantage of our chartered shuttles, you will need to use the local shuttle service (Express Shuttle, $80) or rent a car. We do not recommend taking a taxi. There is more information on our Transportation page, including the schedule for our chartered shuttles back to the airport on Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning and driving directions from Salt Lake City.
I have dietary restrictions. Can I request special meals?
Our meals are buffet style and will have options that will accommodate gluten free, diabetic or vegetarian diets. But be sure to mention any dietary restrictions when you register so we can plan accordingly.
What will the weather be at the Homestead in April?
The average daytime temperatures are likely to be in the upper 50s and lower 60s, while the night-time temperatures will be in the mid 30s. There can be snow in April. You will want a coat or jacket since you will need to walk from the cottage with your guest room to the meeting rooms. Feel free to dress casually (and have a sweater in case you get cold) so you will be comfortable during the classes. None of our evening events are formal, but you are welcome to dress up a bit more if you want.
Can I bring a laptop computer? Is WiFi available?
NEW! If you have a laptop computer, please bring it. It will be useful for the Art & Stitch instruction we will do. We also ask that you bring a USB drive for moving your custom designs from the computer to HQ Pro-Stitcher.
We will have complementary WiFi in our meeting rooms, and WiFi is available in guest rooms for a fee.
I'm in the middle of a project. Will I be able to put my quilt on one of the machines? Is there room for my sewing machine?
We're sorry, but the longarm quilting machines in our lab will be set up for class assignments and aren't available for individual use. If you want to bring a sewing machine, you will need to use it in your guest room. (Most guest rooms have a desk area.)
