Quilting with Decorative Thread
When the top thread is too heavy to go through the eye of the needle, such as embroidery, DMC #8 or Candlelight thread, try loading these decorative threads in your bobbin. Hand-wind or guide the thread as you wind it on the bobbin and quilt your design with the top of your quilt facing down.
The best way to get your designs exact is to quilt the desired areas on the quilt top with wash away thread (www.superiorthreads.com) and regular bobbin thread that matches the back. Once the temporary lines have been quilted for your decorative thread design, un-Velcro the quilt from the poles and flip it so the quilt top is facing down. The wash away thread will now show you where to stitch on the back of the quilt. With your bobbin case loaded with decorative thread and a monofilament on top, re-stitch over your wash away thread design and Ta Da! When you turn your quilt over to look at the top, you have a textured look that will leave others wondering "how did you do that?!"
Note: When using heavy, decorative threads, the tension on your bobbin case must be extremely loose. To save time "tweaking" your tension, purchase a new bobbin case and mark it with a magic marker or nail polish indicating this bobbin tension is loosely set.
