We are pleased to announce the 2016 Handi Quilter University retreat schedule. Plan now to attend an HQU retreat in beautiful Utah. These hands-on retreats are taught by the popular HQ studio educators. Retreats fill up quickly and space is limited. All retreats are held at Handi Quilter's studio in North Salt Lake, UT, unless otherwise noted. We hope to see you at a Handi Quilter retreat in 2016!

Course Descriptions

Basic Sit-down Longarm:
  • Hands-on class taught on HQ Sweet Sixteen  that will cover the proper maintenance, threading and preparing  of a quilt.
  • Tension – In depth instruction for correct thread and bobbin tension
  • TNT – Thread, Needles and Tension using 8 different types and weights of thread
  • Handi Feet –Echo, Couching and Glide feet will be used to complete quilting projects
  • Rulers – Instruction using straight-line rulers, circles, curves, waves, etc. and their uses on quilt blocks
  • Freehand Designs – Continuous travel paths to stitch out designs through the year

Basic Longarm Basic:
  • Hands-on class taught on HQ Avanté that will cover the proper maintenance, threading and loading of a quilt.
  • Tension – In depth instruction for correct thread and bobbin tension
  • TNT – Thread, Needles and Tension using 8 different types and weights of thread
  • Pantographs – Correct placement of the laser light, setting up and edge to edge pantograph, proper advancing and cropping
  • Rulers – Instruction using straight-line rulers, circles, curves, waves, etc. and their uses on quilt blocks
  • Freehand Designs – Continuous travel paths to stitch out designs through the year


HQ Pro-Stitcher:

Quilt edge-to-edge or block patterns with a few simple steps, accurate stitch-in-the-ditch, all using digital patterns. This class will cover all of the tools available in this very powerful program. Learn the steps to get a custom look.

  • Hands-on class taught on HQ Avanté with HQ Pro-Stitcher for each student.
  • Tension –  Instruction for correct thread and bobbin tension, proper maintenance of machine and loading a quilt
  • Resize, rotate and repeat – Make designs fit to specific areas
  • Functions – Settings, and instructions for every key feature
  • Crop – Inside, outside, closed, open and at the bottom of an edge to edge
  • Borders – Corners, blocks  and other odd shaped spaces
  • New Start and Stop – For thread break, or creating new designs, and oversized blocks and borders
  • Edge to Edge – Using wrap for a row or the whole quilt design
